Buhari orders Amaechi, Malami, others with political ambitions to resign

Muhammadu Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has directed that his cabinet members running for elective offices should resign on or before Monday, May 16.

Minister of information and culture Lai Mohammed disclosed this on Wednesday after the federal executive council meeting.

The order affects ministers such as Abubakar Malami running for Kebbi governorship seat, and presidential aspirants Rotimi Amaechi, Godswill Akpabio, Chris Ngige, Ogbonnaya Onu and Emeka Nwajiuba.

Others are Uche Ogar, who is running for Abia governorship position, and Pauline Tallen, vying for Plateau senatorial seat.

Mohammed stressed that this mandate excludes Vice President Yemi Osinbajo because he is an elected member of the cabinet.

He affirmed that any amendment or additions to this directive will be disseminated accordingly.

The minister added that if the need arises, the directive might involve political appointees. A media aide of the president Bashir Ahmad is vying for a seat in the House of Representatives.
