Suspected hoodlums have set on fire the Akwa Ibom office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The office is located at Ibesikpo Asuntan local government area of the state.

The cause of the fire which began around 2 a.m. on Friday was unknown as at press time.

This comes barely 24 hours to the commencement of the governorship/state assembly elections.

Some electoral materials were consumed in the fire. Several card readers meant for use in the elections on Saturday have been destroyed by the fire.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Mike Igini, has visited the scene to ascertain the level of damage.

Reports say the police were able to recover some electoral materials which were not destroyed.

Electoral Officer (EO) for Ibesikpo Asutan, Victor Inyang, said the polls would go on as planned as no ballot papers were destroyed by the fire.
