Babachir Lawal’s N544m alleged fraud trial to begin May 23

Babachir Lawal

Trial of former Secretary to Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, and three others over alleged N544 million fraud will commence on May 23.

Mr Lawal was arraigned on February 12 alongside Hamidu Lawal, a director in Lawal’s company, Sulaiman Abubakar, staff in the company, and Apeh Monday, managing director of Josmon Technologies Limited.

Also joined as defendants in the suit are two companies, Rholavision Engineering Limited and Josmon Technologies Limited.

Lawal is facing a 10-count charge bordering on conspiracy and fraud which he has pleaded not guilty to.

The former SGF was in February granted N50 million bail by a Federal High Court in Abuja.

Justice Jude Okeke of FCT High Court in Maitama on Thursday fixed the trial for May 23 at the instance of the court with the consensus of all counsels in the matter.

President Muhammadu Buhari had in October 2017 sacked Lawal following a report of investigations by a panel headed by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, into allegations of fraud levelled against him.
