Awoniyi missing as Siasia names Olympic squad

Samson Siasia

Coach of Nigeria national U23 team, Samson Siasia, has named his final 18-man squad to the 2016 Rio Olympics football event.

The list released by the former Nantes star on Friday confirmed the duo of John Obi Mikel and goalkeeper, Daniel Akpeyi, as the two over aged players.

Team captain, Azubuike Okechukwu, made the cut, so did Usman Mohammed, Sincere Seth and Junior Ajayi.

AS Roma new kid on the block, Sadiq Umar, William Troost-Ekong and Kingsley Madu are the newbies in the team.

However, the major shocking omission is Liverpool striker, Taiwo Awoniyi, who was only named as an alternative player alongside goalkeeper, Mohammed Yusuf, Stanley Dimgba and Godwin Saviour.

The 18-year-old, who featured predominantly during the qualifying tournament, loses his place after a dip in form during pre-Olympic friendlies.

Nigeria are grouped alongside Japan, Colombia and Sweden in the group with the showpiece set to kick-off on August 5.
