The 82 Division of the Nigerian Army has dismissed Ajayi Johnson who allegedly killed a commercial motorcyclist, Chimaobi Nwogu, at Umoukereke Ngwa in Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia State.

Deputy spokesman of the division, Aliyu Yusuf, announced this in a statement on Wednesday.

Yusuf said Johnson had been handed over to the police in Abia for prosecution.

The soldier had on August 7 shot Mr Nwaogu for reportedly failing to pay bribe of N100 at a military checkpoint.

The army, on August 10, confirmed the motorcyclist was killed by a soldier after initially denying responsibility, saying Nwogu might have been killed by a cultist who was wearing an army T-shirt.

Yusuf said the soldier was tried in accordance with extant rules and regulations of the Nigerian Army and reduced to the rank of a private before being dismissed from service.

“The 82 Division will not condone any act of lawlessness and unprofessional conduct from any of its personnel, and wherever that happens, decisive action will surely be taken against erring personnel,” the statement said.
