Aisha Buhari’s long absence sparks first lady debate on Twitter

First Lady Aisha Buhari

The prolonged absence of First Lady Aisha Buhari from the State House has sparked a Twitter debate about her status.

Mrs Buhari has not been seen in the country since the completion of Hajj in August.

She reportedly travelled out of Saudi Arabia, where she went in company with her husband, to London at the completion of the religious pilgrimage.

Her long stay out of the country fuelled concerns that she left Aso Rock Villa in protest after she lost out in the power game.

She has been represented in public in recent times by the senior special assistant to the president on administration, Dr Hajo Sani, and wife of the Kebbi State governor, Dr. Zainab Bagudu.

Speaking in an interview with punchng.com, director of information to the first lady, Suleiman Haruna, said Aisha’s absence was not due to any infighting in Aso Villa.

Hear him: “It’s a free world and people have been speculating about everything in this country and it is allowed.

“She is a free Nigerian and does not work for the government. So, if she decides to stay somewhere in her village for two months or to go somewhere and stay for two months, why should it become a national issue?”

Unsatisfied, Nigerians have taken to Twitter to ask questions about their first lady’s whereabouts.

Some even speculate that President Muhammadu Buhari is considering marrying minister of humanitarian affairs, disaster management and social development, Sadiya Farouq, as new wife.
