Aguiyi-Ironsi’s wife dies at 97

Victoria Aguiyi-Ironsi, wife of the late head of state Major General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi, has passed on at the age of 97.

The former first lady died on Monday. She would have been 98 on November 21, 2021.

Her husband was the supreme commander of the national military government for six months before being overthrown and assassinated in the 1966 counter-coup.

Her death follows that of Adanma Okpara, wife of the First Republic premier of the defunct Eastern Nigeria late Michael Okpara, who died also at the age of 97.

Mrs Okpara reportedly died on Sunday morning in an undisclosed hospital in Enugu.
