President of the African Boxing Union (ABU), Houcine Houichi, has applauded organisers of the GOtv Boxing Night for reviving the sport in Nigeria and on the continent.

Speaking while receiving the Chief Executive Officer, Flykite Promotions, the promoter of the GOtv Boxing Night, Mr. Jenkins Alumona, at the ongoing African Boxing Union Convention in Lilongwe, Malawi on Wednesday, Houichi said hope has been restored to boxing with the involvement of GOtv.

An elated Houichi, who doubles as the World Boxing Council (WBC) vice president, urged the promoters and the organisers not to relent in their efforts to restore the continent’s lost glory in boxing.

“We have great talents in Africa but the opportunity to showcase their potential is lacking. I must commend you guys for making our jobs easier and putting smiles on the faces of our boxers and the managers alike.

“I have been following the progress of the GOtv Boxing Night and I’m quite sure the promotion is one of the best if not the best we have on the continent at the moment.

“GOtv has succeeded in making boxing a real business. Should we have other corporate sponsors lending their support to the sport, African boxing would rule the world,” the Tunisian said.

In a similar vein, President, Ghana Boxing Federation, Peter Zwennes, attested to GOtv’s drive to get boxing back to its glorious days.

“I have watched all the GOtv Boxing Night fights as it is beamed live to us in Ghana. Some of our boxers have also participated in it. It is a welcome development and I will be willing to get further involved in the promotions,” he offered.

Other delegates from South Africa, Zambia, Malawi, Ghana and Zimbabwe at the ABU convention salute GOtv for the initiative to revive boxing.

It would be recalled that the GOtv Boxing Night has hosted professional boxers from Uganda, Ghana and Republic of Benin, among other African nations.

GOtv Boxing Night Season 8, according to the organisers, will hold on July 30 in Lagos.
