Actor Solomon Akiyesi dies in his sleep

Actor Solomon Akiyesi has reportedly died in his sleep.

According to Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) president Abubakar Yakubu, the actor died on Sunday.

Mr Yakubu confirmed the development on Monday, saying Solomon died in his sleep and his body has been deposited at a mortuary in Abuja.

“Yes, it is true. He died yesterday. Slept and did not wake up. We await further details from the family. His body is in the morgue in Abuja, where the sad incident happened,” The Cable quotes Mr Yakubu as saying.

Solomon was born and raised in Ososo, Akoko Edo Local Government Area of Edo State. He had his early education in his hometown before proceeding to the University of Ibadan.

He worked as an actor, producer and director, featuring in films such as Deadly Affair (1995), Olaedo the Fisher Girl 2 (2015), Gen Z Wife (2024), Kiss My Pain and Heart of a Saint.

He also served on the board of the Actors Guild of Nigeria and was president of the National Association of Ososo Creatives.

In April 2013, his wedding to his second wife Uloma Agwu was disrupted at Overcomers Church World Outreach in Surulere, Lagos, after his first wife Lilian appeared at the ceremony, saying they were still legally married. The incident caused a scene before order was restored by police officers. The actor later apologised for the disruption.

Beyond acting, Solomon was known for stage performances and involvement in cultural activities linked to his Edo roots. He was also associated with faith based projects and community initiatives, and often spoke about using film to promote African stories.

His death adds to recent losses in Nollywood. Further details about funeral arrangements are yet to be announced by his family.
