Chairman/chief executive officer of Nigeria Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has visited a prison in Cotonou, Benin Republic, to check on Nigerian inmates.

Mrs Dabiri-Erewa said in a tweet on Wednesday that she visited one of the prisons in the French-speaking country.

She was accompanied on the visit by the Nigerian Ambassador to Benin Republic, Kayode Oguntuase.

“In Coronou, with the Nigerian Amb to Benin Republic, as we visited one of the prisons in Cotonou to check on Nigerians in prison. Some are there for minor offenses, some awaiting trial for years, Amb Oguntuase is already intervening in the minor cases and those awaiting trial,” she said.

Dabiri-Erewa also said in response to a tweet that no prisoner agreement treaty was signed between Nigeria and Benin Republic.

“Some with minor offenses not yet tried can be released, with some diplomatic intervention as the Ambassafor is now doing. But no prisoner agreement treaty signed yet between both countries,” she said.
