7 films by Kunle Afolayan before The Tribunal

Filmmaker, Kunle Afolayan, will premiere The Tribunal starring Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, Bimbo Manuel, Funsho Adeolu, Nobert Young and Carol King among others at the Silverbird Galleria, Lagos on Friday.

The last of three-film collaboration between Golden Effects Pictures and Africa Magic Films, it comes after Omugwo starring Patience Ozokwor, Ayo Adesanya, Ken Erics and Omowunmi Dada; and Roti which parades Kate Henshaw, Faithia Balogun, Toyin Oshinaike and Kunle Afolayan himself.

Before walking the red carpet with others at the premiere, we present seven films produced by the man setting an agenda for Nollywood.

  1. Irapada

Irapada is a 2006 supernatural film starring Deola Oloyede, Kunle Afolayan and Toun Oni. A year after, it was screened at the Pan African Film Festival (PAFF) in Los Angeles and won the Africa Movie Academy Award (AMAA) for Best Film in an African Language. It was also featured as one of the Best African Films of the 21st century on CNN African Voices in 2013. Irapada is Kunle Afolayan’s first film as director and producer.

  1. The Figurine

The Figurine is a 2009 Nigerian supernatural suspense film written by Kemi Adesoye and directed by Kunle Afolayan, who also stars in the film as one of the main protagonists. It also stars Ramsey Nouah, Omoni Oboli and Funlola Aofiyebi.

The movie narrates the story of two friends who finds a mystical sculpture in an abandoned shrine in the forest while serving at a National Youth Service Corps camp, and one of them decides to take the artwork home. Unknown to them, the sculpture is from the goddess ‘Araromire’ which bestows seven years of good luck on anyone who encounters it, and after the seven years have expired, seven years of bad luck follow. The lives of the two friends begin to change for good, as they become successful and wealthy businessmen. However, after seven years, things start to change for the worse.

The movie received 10 nominations and won five awards at AMAA 2010, including the awards for Best Picture, Heart of Africa, Achievement in Cinematography and Achievement in Visual Effects

  1. Phone swap

Phone Swap is a 2012 romance comedy drama written by Kemi Adesoye, directed and produced by Kunle Afolayan. It stars Nse Ikpe Etim, Wale Ojo, Joke Silva, Chika Okpala, Lydia Forson and Hafeez Oyetoro.

It tells the story of Mary, a warm-hearted fashion designer who works under a very stringent boss, and Akin, an arrogant, withdrawn and bossy business executive. They accidentally swap their mobile phones at a busy airport, which leads to an exchange in their destinations and the need to help carryout each other’s assignments.

  1. October 1

October 1 is a 2014 dark psychological thriller written by Tunde Babalola, produced and directed by Kunle Afolayan. It stars Sadiq Daba, Kayode Olaiya, David Bailie, Kehinde Bankole, Kanayo O. Kanayo, Fabian Adeoye Lojede, and Demola Adedoyin; it also features special appearance from Deola Sagoe.

The film, which is set in colonial Nigeria, narrates the story of Danladi Waziri, a police officer from Northern Nigeria who is posted to a remote town of Akote in Western Nigeria to investigate the frequent female murder cases in the community, and have the mystery solved before the Nigerian flag is raised on October 1, Nigeria’s Independence Day.

  1. The CEO

The CEO is a 2016 film directed by Kunle Afolayan, starring Kemi Lala Akindoju, Hilda Dokubo, Jimmy Jean-Louis and Angélique Kidjo.

The movie is about five top level staff of a company who are selected for a retreat where the new CEO of a global company will be chosen. What starts off as cordial exercise soon goes sour as they attempt to outdo one another to be named The CEO.

  1. Omugwo

Omugwo is a 2017 drama comedy directed by Kunle Afolayan starring Patience Ozokwor, as well as Ayo Adesanya, Omowunmi Dada, Christian Paul, Ken Erics and Henry ‘Old Skool’ Alade.

Written by Kemi Adesoye, Omugwo tells the story of Omotunde, a young Yoruba civil engineer who just had a baby. She is married to Raymond, an Igbo OAP.

Coloured by their different cultural backgrounds, their mothers-in-law forcefully move in with the couple to perform the Igbo childcare rite called Omugwo. But instead of relieving their children of the burden of childcare, the mothers’ rivalry complicates life for the young couple to comical effects.

  1. Roti

Roti is a 2017 psychological thriller starring Kunle Afolayan, Kate Henshaw, Toyin Oshinaike, Faithia Balogun and Kunle Afolayan’s son Dari. The subject matter of the film is reincarnation.

The film tells the story of a couple, Kabir and Dianne, battling with the loss of their only son. Four years after they lost Roti to a brief illness, Dianne comes in contact with a boy named Juwon, who looks exactly like her dead son. She initially received the experience in wonder and hope of a reunited future with her dead son, but after she discovered that Juwon is not her dead son she is washed anew with grief, depression and desperation.
