5 years after La Femme Anjola, Mildred Okwo returns to cinema with On Different Grounds

Mildred Okwo

Five years after her dark psychological thriller La Femme Anjola, filmmaker Mildred Okwo has dropped the official trailer for her upcoming romantic dramedy On Different Grounds, officially staking her claim in Nollywood’s evolving cinematic landscape.

The film, a cross-cultural collaboration blending Nollywood and Bollywood, is scheduled for a nationwide cinema release on June 12, 2026.

Produced by Nicolette Ndigwe-Kalu under HB&Q Impressions and distributed by Cinemax, the project comes with a reported price tag of ₦476.6 million ($350,000). This marks Okwo’s first major release since her 2021 psychological thriller La Femme Anjola, and comes fourteen years after her iconic romantic comedy The Meeting (2012).

The trailer lays out a story centred on a divorced real estate billionaire couple who have to swallow their pride and reunite for their eldest daughter’s wedding. However, things take a chaotic turn as the daughter secretly schemes to sabotage her own big day in a desperate bid to get her parents back together.

To pull off the script, the producers brought together a three-woman writing team. The collaborative screenplay was written by Nicole Ndigwe-Kalu, Temitope Bolade-Akinbode and Diche Enunwa, who previously worked on the 2021 cross-cultural hit Namaste Wahala.

The film stars a heavy-hitting cast that mixes veteran Nollywood stars with international actors. Audiences can expect to see Bob-Manuel Udokwu, Jennifer Eliogu, Nkem Owoh, Uche Jombo, Ebele Okaro and Uche Montana sharing the screen with Indian actors Vineet Raina and Nimesh Diliprai.

Speaking in a recent interview, Okwo described On Different Grounds as “a film for the people. Emotional in some ways, sweet in some ways, funny in some ways and full of drama.”

At ₦476.6 million, the film is one of the more expensive projects hitting theatres this mid-year. While that price tag puts a lot of pressure on the film to perform, industry insiders expect it to be a steady, long-term earner rather than a film that instantly shatters historic box-office records.

Because Mildred Okwo is known for making movies with staying power rather than relying on quick internet hype, projections point to a stable theatrical run. The unique Nigerian-Indian cultural mashup is also expected to draw a dedicated, consistent crowd across major cities, positioning the film as a solid commercial performer for the second quarter of the year.

Advance tickets are already on sale at major cinema chains across the country ahead of the June 12 premiere.
