5 observations as FC IfeanyiUbah win Federation Cup ‎

FC IfeanyiUbah won the 2016 Federation Cup after beating Nasarawa United 5-4 on penalties at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos on Sunday.

With the game failing to produce a goal after regulation time, it was straight to the spot to decide who clinches the 74th edition of the prestigious title.

And IfeanyiUbah, playing at their maiden final made it count to win their first ever domestic title which automatically qualifies them for the continent.

Here are five observations from that nail-biting encounter.

  1. IfeanyiUbah dorn West Ham kit

Just like clubs across the world, Premier League side, West Ham, share a cordial relationship with IfeanyiUbah. The pair exchange pleasantries on Twitter wishing each other good luck prior to games. But it was surprising to see the Nnewi-based appear in the kit of the Hammers in the final.

  1. Nasarawa unlucky

Nasarawa United proved to be the better side in the encounter with their quality passing and pace. The Solid Miners even came close to sealing victory seconds before full-time but were unlucky and eventually lost on penalties.

  1. Ezenwa missing

Kelechi Ezenwa is the only home based player picked by Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr, for the forthcoming 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Algeria. The goalkeeper is even being tipped to start after regular first choice, Carl Ikeme, pulled out due to injury. But it was shocking to see the experienced goalie on the bench for the Anambra Warriors.

  1. Nigerian celebrities love football

The 2016 Federation Cup exposed some top Nigerian celebrities who love the game of football. Comedian, AY, and rapper, Falz, were among a host of top entertainers in the country who showed up at Teslim Balogun Stadium to watch the oldest club competition in Nigeria.

  1. Topnotch officiating

One major nightmare for many Nigerians leading to this game was definitely the officiating. However, the team of referees led by Abimbola Quadri held their own in the encounter and certainly didn’t disappoint.
