No less than 176 people on board a Ukrainian Boeing 737-800 plane have been killed on Wednesday in a crash shortly after takeoff from Tehran.

The plane was heading to Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital.

The Iranian state news media cited technical problems on the plane, though circumstances behind the crash are still not fully known.

A total of 167 passengers and nine crew members were aboard the aircraft operated by Ukraine International Airlines.

The crash comes amid escalating tension between the United States and Iran, which on Tuesday attacked two bases in Iraq that house American troops.

The Boeing 737 has also been a subject of controversy over its safety in the air with two crashes involving the model in 2019.
