At least 15 inmates have escaped after a jailbreak at the Nsukka Prison in Enugu State.

Agency reports indicated that the inmates broke through their cells and escaped over the prison fence late Tuesday.

“The inmates carefully opened their cells and scaled the perimeter fence of the prison.

“Before prison officials on night duty knew what was happening, about 15 inmates had escaped,” a source told newsmen.

Confirming the report, Mr. Lawrence Okonkwo, controller of prison, said, “Yes there was a jailbreak last night in Nsukka prison but I am not in a position to say how many prisoners escaped.

“We are expecting the Enugu State prisons controller, Mr. Isaiah Amariri, in Nsukka Prison, so that we debrief him on what happened last night.

“He will be the one to tell the public the number of inmates that escaped, the re-arrested ones and efforts put in place to arrest those still on the run.”

Built to hold 180 inmates, Nsukka Prison currently accommodates over 500 prisoners.

There were recent jailbreaks in Kuje in the Federal Capital Territory and the Koton Karfe Prison in Kogi State.
