10 things to expect from AMVCA 2016

IK Osakioduwa and Minnie Dlamini

The 2016 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) is just a few days away and excitement is almost at fever pitch level. Before the red carpets roll and celebrities start behaving badly here are 10 things to look out for come March 5.

  1. Bad fashion choices

Like every award show there will always be that one person or group of people that will make us scream ‘why’. Our eyes still itch from Adunni Ade’s risqué and tacky dressing from last year’s show.

  1. The hosts will slay every appearance

Nigeria’s IK Osakioduwa and South Africa’s Minenhle ‘Minnie’ Dlamini are set to host this year’s show and all we can see is how great they will appear on stage. If IK’s past appearance is anything to go by, then we know the presenter will be giving us some man crush vibes. Minnie on the other hand is known to be a fashionista, so we can expect her to slay every attire and show off some ample assets.

  1. The long speech

What is an award show without a winner to deliver a long boring speech? Unless AMVCA turns Oscar and gives winners only 45 seconds to give their acceptance speech, we can expect to hear someone mention over 50 names while going back and forth. We get it, you are grateful.

  1. Genevieve Nnaji’s dress will be the topic of discussion

It has become a routine that Genevieve Nnaji’s outfit of choice is the subject matter of events she attends. This is probably because whatever she puts on is perfection. So just watch out for that magnificent dress on the carpet.

  1. Mispronunciation of names

What are the chances that a celebrity will wrongly pronounce a name? About 50%. It is an award for Africans which means there are chances that most people don’t know how to pronounce names from other countries. Let us just pray it is not embarrassing.

  1. The side eye

The good old side eye is guaranteed to happen. You might not catch it on screen but there is always that person that gives the stink eye if someone they do not like gets called out to get an award. It is not a conscious thing; it is just something that happens to everyone. Ask Tori Kelly or Leonardo DiCaprio.

  1. The cute and weird dates

Getting someone to accompany you to an award show can be stressful if you are not married. While some dates are so cute you want to be like them, others just stir up unnecessary speculations majorly because they look so odd together.

  1. Denrele the drag

This should not come as a surprise because it always happens. Media personality, Denrele Edun, will gracefully walk the carpet looking every inch a drag- just the way we have come to love him.

  1. Fascinating fashion ensembles

There is no doubt Nigerians love fashion. They go all out with their decisions and don’t mind what it might cost them. If there is something guaranteed to happen; it is that actors, artistes and socialites will make us say ‘wow’ to their incredible fashion ensembles.

  1. The shock

The shock is another term for disappointment. Sadly, many were called but only few will be chosen. So many actors will go home feeling disappointed that they did not win a category they felt they should have won. It is just something that happens; Leonardo DiCaprio felt it four times before finally winning an Oscar in 2016.
