You can’t shame me with HIV, Bisi Alimi tells critics

Nigerian queer rights activist and openly gay media personality Bisi Alimi has reacted to comments about his HIV status, saying that he is not ashamed of living with HIV.

Alimi made this known in an Instagram post on Friday.

“I have been living with HIV for 17 years, so forget it, you can’t shame me with HIV. I even choose to announce to the world that I have HIV. You really have to look for another material,” he wrote.

Alimi gained international attention when he became the first Nigerian to disclose his sexuality and HIV status on television.

In April 2007, he was forced to flee Nigeria following threats to his life. He was granted asylum in 2008 in the UK where he has been a resident since. On December 8, 2014, he was conferred with British citizenship.
