Yekini: 9 unforgettable facts about Nigeria’s immortal No 9

Wednesday, May 4, 2016 made it four years since former Super Eagles forward, Rashidi Yekini, died in a rather tragic manner in Ibadan, Oyo State, South West Nigeria.

The lethal striker will forever be in the heart of football followers.

  1. He started his professional football career in 1982 with Shooting Stars of Ibadan, where he scored a whopping 45 goals in 53 appearances.
  2. He scored his first goal for the Super Eagles at the age of 21 on 6 April, 1985.
  3. He was the first Nigerian footballer to win the African Footballer of the Year award in 1993.
  4. Yekini scored Nigeria’s first ever World cup goal in at USA 94 against Bulgaria.
  5. Image of him celebrating the goal by grabbing and shaking the net is one of the most iconic in the history of football.
  6. He single-handedly led Nigeria to 1994 Nations cup triumph.
  7. Yekini is the highest goal scorer for Nigeria with 37 goals in 58 appearances.
  8. He started his professional football career in the National league and ended it in the National league with Gateway FC in 2005.
