Singer Wizkid has come under scrutiny after old tweets from 2010 resurfaced showing him expressing a crush on a girl he later discovered was just 14 years old.
The singer, who was 19 at the time, deleted the tweets shortly after they began circulating again on social media.
One of the tweets read:
“Damn!!!…dis girl is to00000000000 cuteeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!… bt she’s 14..crying…she looks 19!.crying”
In another tweet, he wrote:
“Show was funnn!!!!…..d cute 14 yr old babe was jst screaming..ahn ahn..plenty small girls jst dey shout..kai!!…lol.so girls like me?.lol”
A third tweet read:
“Dis girl is too cute…I go bone age o…kai!!…”
The resurfacing comes amid heightened scrutiny of past social media activity by public figures, following the recent controversy surrounding Paystack co-founder Ezra Olubi, whose old posts also resurfaced and triggered public outrage. Many social media users see this as part of a larger reckoning where celebrities are held accountable for things they posted online years ago.
While some fans argue Wizkid was only 19 at the time and may not have fully understood the implications, others criticised the comments as inappropriate and reflective of the power imbalance between a rising star and a minor. Adding fuel to the controversy, an old remark from Banky W, then head of Empire Mates Entertainment where Wizkid was signed, also resurfaced and has been viewed as tone-deaf.
Wizkid has not publicly commented on the resurfaced tweets.
