Williams sisters to clash in Australian Open final

The Australian Open women’s singles final will be a family affair after Venus and Serena Williams booked their place in Saturday’s decider.

Venus overcame American Coco Vandeweghe 6-7 6-2 6-3 to reach her first major final since 2009, while her younger sister dropped just three games in her 6-2 6-1 defeat of Mirjana Lucic-Baroni.

Despite being the oldest competitor in the singles draw, Venus has continued to roll back the years during the tournament and the seven-time Grand Slam champion once again defied her age as she came from behind to beat Vandeweghe on Rod Laver Arena.

Vandeweghe had defeated world number one, Angelique Kerber, and seventh seed, Garbine Muguruza, on her way to the last four.

A ninth all-Williams Grand Slam final was confirmed when Serena brushed aside Lucic-Baroni in the day’s second semi-final.

Serena began strongly to break her Croatian opponent in the third game.
