Why late army chief Attahiru’s family boycotted award ceremony

Late chief of army staff Ibrahim Attahiru

The family of the late chief of army staff Lt. Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru boycotted the national awards ceremony in Abuja on Tuesday over alleged non-invitation to the occasion, Qed.ng has learnt.

Attahiru died alongside 10 other senior military officers in the Nigerian Air Force’s Beechcraft aircraft crash in Kaduna on May 21, 2021.

He was among the 13 persons honoured posthumously by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Attahiru was awarded Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic.

Family sources told PUNCH that neither Attahiru’s widow Fati nor any member of his family got an invitation to attend the ceremony for such an honour.

The source said, “The family only got to know about him being on the awardees list through social media. That was why she (Fati) or any member of the family didn’t show up at the event.”

The source added that the family appreciates President Buhari for the honour.

Spokesperson, Federal Ministry of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, Julie Osagie-Jacobs, was unreachable for comments, the newspaper reported.
