We’re proud of you, FG praises Super Eagles after AFCON semi-final loss to Morocco

Federal Government has commended the Super Eagles following Nigeria’s exit from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Nigeria crashed out of the tournament on Wednesday night after losing to Morocco on penalties in the semi-final.

The match ended goalless after regulation time and extra time before Morocco won 4-2 in the shootout to book a place in the final.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said the Super Eagles’ performance reflected discipline, unity and resilience, adding that the team’s effort throughout the competition was a source of pride to the country.

“Even in defeat, you showed character, teamwork, and resilience, and those qualities matter deeply to the nation you represent,” Mr Idris said.

He noted that football comes with both success and setbacks, but said the players’ commitment and performance during the tournament earned them respect from Nigerians at home and abroad.

“Football has its highs and lows, but your effort, commitment, and fighting spirit throughout this tournament have earned the respect and gratitude of Nigerians at home and abroad,” the statement read.

Idris urged the players to learn from the experience, remain united and return stronger, adding that wearing the national colours symbolises courage and unity.

“Nigeria remains proud of you and grateful for the joy and hope you gave us during this competition. Well done, Super Eagles. The nation stands with you, always,” he added.

Morocco secured victory in the shootout after goalkeeper Yassine Bounou saved penalties from Samuel Chukwueze and Bruno Onyemaechi, while Youssef En-Nesyri converted the winning kick at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.

Morocco will face Senegal in the final on Sunday after the Lions of Teranga defeated Egypt 1-0 in the other semi-final.
