Minister of finance and coordinating minister of the economy Wale Edun has been elected president of the Nigerian Boxing Federation (NBF).
Minister Edun was elected unopposed after securing all 12 votes cast by delegates at the federation’s elective congress held on Saturday at the Package B Indoor Sports Hall of the MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.
In his post-election remarks, Edun said the new board would introduce structural and developmental reforms to strengthen boxing in Nigeria.
“Our goal is to restore Nigerian boxing to its rightful place on the global stage through transparency, inclusion, and strong grassroots development,” he said.
While Edun’s election was uncontested, the position of vice president was decided through voting.
The South-West representative, Omonlei Imadu, defeated his North-Central counterpart, Mighty Mike, by eight votes to four.
Mr Imadu commended Edun’s emergence and pledged to work with him to achieve the federation’s objectives.
“The Honorable Minister’s passion for boxing is clear. His work in supporting young boxers through grassroots initiatives is known,” Imadu said.
“We will work together to actualize his vision for Nigerian boxing.”
He also commended the National Sports Commission, led by Shehu Dikko as chairman and Bukola Olopade as director general, for conducting a transparent and fair election.
Outside his role in government, Edun chairs the Lagos Boxing Hall of Fame, a non-profit organisation he founded in 2010 to support amateur boxing talent.
The body organises regular tournaments and facilitates international participation for young boxers.
Wale Edun also serves as a board member and Nigerian chair of the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Foundation and chairs Livewell Initiative, a health-focused NGO.
