UNILAG worker kills self after appearing before panel

A member of staff of the University of Lagos, Akoka (UNILAG) has died by suicide after appearing before a panel over a bus in his care which got burnt.

Sunday Meshioye killed himself on Wednesday by consuming deadly insecticide, Sniper.

He was questioned by the panel on Tuesday.

UNILAG’s principal assistant registrar and head of information unit, Taiwo Oloyede, said Mr Meshioye was a driver attached to the Sociology Department, Faculty of Social Science.

Mrs Oloyede said the committee had not concluded the investigation before the worker took his life.

“A driver with the University of Lagos is suspected to have committed suicide. He was facing a panel that was set up to unravel the circumstances that led to the destruction by fire, of an official vehicle,” she said.

“The unfortunate incident took place before the panel concluded its investigation. It’s indeed a sad situation.”

The victim was taken to the university’s health centre before being transferred to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi Araba, where he died.

He is survived by a wife and three children.
