Authorities of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) have confirmed the death of a 100-level student identified as Ayomide Ariyibi who allegedly killed herself after she was accused of theft.

A report by Punch quoted the school’s deputy registrar, Toyin Adebule, as saying the student died at home from deliberate poisoning.

“She died at home. There is a rumour that she was accused of stealing some things in the hostel. When we meet the family, we will know what exactly happened. But definitely, she is dead. Definitely, she committed suicide. I have gone to her hall and I have confirmed the incident. Our thoughts are with the family,” Adebule said.

According to multiple media reports, trouble started when Ayomide’s roommates at the institution’s Amina Hall accused her of stealing make-up and clothes which were later found in her possession.

After enduring the most unsparing of abuse, the student called her mother who came take her home the day after.

On the way home, Ayomide was said to have been booed by fellow students in the presence of her mother, who is said to be a UNILAG staff.

Upon getting home, the older woman went back to her duty post, leaving her daughter by herself.

When she got back, she reportedly met Ayomide writhing in pain with a can of insecticide nearby.

The student was immediately rushed to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) where doctors pronounced her dead.
