UCL: Real Madrid, PSG battle to draw; Martial rescues point for Manchester United

By Toby Prince

RonaldoCristiano Ronaldo could not find the target for Real Madrid and Zlatan Ibrahimovic had an even less impressive performance for Paris Saint-Germain as the Group A leaders drew 0-0 in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Perfect in their two previous group games, PSG and Real produced a largely sterile match at the Parc des Princes.

The three-time defending French champions lacked imagination and pace to break through the 10-time European champions’ defence, with Madrid happy to sit back and play on the counterattack.

In the absence of the injured Gareth Bale, Karim Benzema and James Rodriguez, Madrid coach Rafael Benitez had to field a largely reshuffled team that still created the best chances.

Both PSG and Real have seven points halfway through the group stage.

Anthony Martial gave away an early penalty and then scored the equaliser as Manchester United came back to draw 1-1 with CSKA Moscow.

United’s struggles in Europe continued on a cold night in Russia, with Louis van Gaal’s men lacking creativity for much of the Group B game.

CSKA took the lead when Martial handballed as he tried to stop CSKA’s Mario Fernandes.

Goalkeeper David De Gea saved the 15th-minute spot-kick from Roman Eremenko, but the ball fell to Seydou Doumbia for an easy finish.

United equalised when Antonio Valencia crossed for Martial to score with a diving header in the 65th minute.

In England, Kevin De Bruyne scored an injury-time winner as Manchester City rallied to beat Sevilla 2-1  and continue their recovery in Group D.

Playing as a lone striker in the final minutes, the Belgium playmaker collected a pass from Yaya Toure, cut inside and drove a low left-footed shot inside the far post in the first of four minutes of stoppage time.

Yevhen Konoplyanka put Sevilla ahead in the 30th minute with a first-time shot from 12 metres (yards) as the Spanish team caused City problems on the counter-attack in an open game at Etihad Stadium.

Sevilla defender Adil Rami unwittingly bundled the ball into his own net in the 36th to put City level.

City is second in the group, a point behind Juventus.
