Two suicide bombers killed in failed attack on Adamawa church

Boko Haram bomb explosion

Two suicide bombers on Sunday morning died in a failed bomb attack on St. Pius Catholic Church in Shuwa community, Madagali local government area of Adamawa State.

Madagali is the home town of the governorship candidate of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ahmadu Fintiri, who was in the countryside on Saturday to cast his vote.

Catholic Bishop of Yola Diocese, Dami Mamza, told newsmen that the suspected Boko Haram members aimed at gaining access into the church during an ongoing mass.

The attack occurred at about 7.30 a.m. near the church which usually houses about 1,500 worshippers.

Mamza said a patrol team averted a major crisis in the community after denying the bombers entry thereby forcing the explosives to detonate far from the church premises.

The bishop said two people were injured in the explosion. He also praised the swift response of the military to the area.

Shuwa community is about 30 minutes’ drive to the Sambisa stronghold of Boko Haram.
