Police in Anambra have confirmed that five persons, including two policemen and three civilians, were killed in Sunday attack on the convoy of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah.

Ubah’s convoy was hit by gunmen in Enugwu-Ukwu, Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra. Ubah was returning to his hometown, Nnewi.

Spokesman of Anambra State Police Command Tochukwu Ikenga told PUNCH on Monday that no arrest has been made.

Apart from the five persons killed, the police spokesperson added that two policemen, who were injured, are currently receiving treatment.

“Two policemen and three civilians were killed in the attack while the two injured police officers are currently receiving treatment,” he said.

Ubah had earlier on Monday told journalists that he lost two personal aides: his treasurer Ikechukwu Odum, and personal assistant, Goodness Mathias.

The newspaper gathered from a source that another man, who was not in Ubah’s convoy, was killed.

The source said the man was identified as Onowu Agu-Ukwu Nri. “He is said to be a titled chief in the neighbouring Nri community and had just driven to Enugwu-Ukwu to drop someone who visited him, who would be travelling to Lagos this morning, and he was unlucky to be at that point at the time when Senator Ubah was attacked,” the source said.

According to Ubah’s media aide Kameh Ogbonna, the legislator would have been killed but for his bulletproof SUV.
