Three students of Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO) have died in a hostel after reportedly consuming a mixture of tramadol, codeine and vodka.

The corpses were found at Sunshine Castle Hostel, Umuchima Ihiagwa, a community around the University’s location.

Eyewitnesses said two of the students died on the spot while the only lady among them and a male were found unconscious.

On admission at Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owerri, sources said the male student died while the lady remained unconscious.

The police have put the hostel on lockdown.

Spokesperson of the police in Imo, Orlando Ikeokwu, however, said two students died in the hospital after they were found unconscious.

“The caretaker reported the matter and our men visited the scene and found the four of them stark naked and unconscious.

“They were rushed to the hospital where two of them gave up the ghost. Substances suspected to be tramadol and Indian hemp were found with them,” Mr Ikeokwu said.

When contacted, FUTO spokesperson, Uche Nwaelue, said the institution has not verified yet if the victims were its students.
