Former First Lady of Ondo State Betty Akeredolu has marked her 72nd birthday with a powerful reflection on life, widowhood and resilience, two years after the death of her husband, late Governor Rotimi Akeredolu.

In a heartfelt message posted on Instagram on Sunday, Mrs. Akeredolu described herself as “still standing, still thriving,” despite the challenges life has thrown her way, including being a breast cancer survivor for 28 years and navigating life after losing her husband.

“I turn 72 today, July 20. Two years into widowhood, 28 years a breast cancer survivor—and I’m still standing. Still thriving,” she wrote.

Akeredolu revealed that she has remained academically active, joining the Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD), FUTA Chapter, where she presented two scientific papers on her innovation: solar-powered recirculating aquaculture systems.

“A new academic path, at 72. Because purpose never retires,” she said.

The advocate and founder of the Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria (BRECAN) also highlighted her continued activism through her foundation, BAAF, which supports initiatives for girls in STEM, birth registration with UNHCR, solar technology in agriculture, healthcare in rural areas, and justice for the voiceless.

“They tried to silence me. But I write, I speak, I act. I am living proof that resilience is a superpower,” she wrote, concluding with, “Here’s to thriving beyond widowhood.”

Akeredolu’s tribute comes nearly two years after the death of her husband, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, who died on December 27, 2023, after a prolonged battle with prostate cancer.

He died at a hospital in Germany, aged 67.

Governor Akeredolu, a senior advocate of Nigeria (SAN), served as Governor of Ondo State from 2017 until his death.

He was widely known for his bold leadership and vocal stance on national issues, particularly regional security and restructuring.
