Former chairman of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Prof. Chidi Odinkalu, has said that the new speaker of Abia State House of Assembly, Chinedum Orji, is reportedly being groomed to be governor.

Chinedum is the son of Senator Theodore Orji who governed Abia as governor from 2007 to 2015.

The second-term lawmaker emerged Speaker unopposed during plenary on Monday.

Chinedum, who represents Umuahia Central State Constituency, was the majority leader in the sixth assembly.

Prof. Odinkalu, in a tweet on Monday, said the new speaker was being reportedly groomed to be governor of the state.

He also accused the senior Orji of running the “state aground” during his tenure.

“Abia State House of Assembly has new Speaker – Chinedum Enyinnaya Orji, representing Umuahia Central. His father, Theodore Orji, is 2-term Senator who ran the state aground over 8 yrs until 2015. Orji Jr. is reportedly being groomed to be next Gov of Abia,” Odinkalu wrote.
