A teacher in Tanzania, Respicius Mtazangira, has been sentenced to death by hanging for beating a pupil to death.

The teacher had accused his 14-year-old pupil, Sperius Eradius, of stealing a female teacher’s handbag.

The co-defendant, Heriet Gerald, whose handbag the child was accused of stealing, was not found guilty of committing an offence.

Judge Lameck Mlacha said the teacher had acted maliciously when he repeatedly hit the child with a blunt object in August 2018.

The boy’s death at Kibeta Primary school in Bukoba town sparked national outrage.

The family of the deceased had refused to bury him until the culprit was arrested.
