A suspected rice smuggler has allegedly killed an official of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) in Gumel local government area of Jigawa State.

Spokesperson for Kano/Jigawa Customs area command, Isa Dan-Baba, told journalists on Tuesday that the deceased, Azeez Tunde-Wasiu, was run over by a vehicle at Emir’s Palace road in Gumel town in an apparent attempt to escape arrest.

Mr Dan-Baba said Tunde-Wasiu died in the hospital, adding that the suspected smuggler also hit two persons who were on a mototcycle at Gidan Gawo quarters.

He said the two persons, 32-year-old Usman Abdu and 29-year-old Adda’u Dahiru, were receiving treatment at Gumel hospital.

The spokesperson explained that the customs officials, who were in a private car, Peugeot 406, without a registration number, engaged the suspect, who was said to be in a Volkswagen Golf, in hot pursuit from Sule Tankarkar road towards Gumel town.

Dan-Baba said that Tunde-Wasiu attempted to shoot the suspect after successfully overtaking the vehicle, only to be run over by the suspect.
