Super Eagles World Cup star joins second South African club

Ejike Uzoenyi

A member of the Super Eagles squad to the 2014 FIFA World Cup, Ejike Uzoenyi, has joined South African side, Bidvest Wits, on a free transfer.

The Johannesburg-based side, who finished second in the country’s Premier Soccer League (PSL) last season, took to Twitter on Tuesday to announce his signing.

Wits thus become Uzoenyi’s second South African club after his two-year stint at Mamelodi Sundowns ended last year.

The 28-year-old started his career at Enyimba in 2005 before joining Enugu Rangers three years after. This was followed by an unfruitful spell in France with Rennes and then a return to Rangers.

His breakthrough came with the Super Eagles B team at the 2014 African Nations Championship where he finished as the tournament’s most valuable player.

This prompted the national team coaches to hand him an invite for the FIFA World Cup same year in Brazil.
