Super Eagles and Udinese FC goalkeeper, Maduka Okoye, has been appointed an ambassador of Enugu State by Governor Peter Mbah. The announcement was made during Okoye’s visit to the Government House in Enugu on Tuesday.
Okoye, who hails from Enugu, expressed excitement about reconnecting with his roots and revealed plans to establish a charitable foundation and a football academy in the state. These initiatives, he said, aim to inspire young talents and nurture future stars in football and beyond.
“I’m truly excited to be back home. Enugu is my origin, and I carry it with pride everywhere I go,” the 25-year-old said. “I look forward to giving back by setting up a foundation for humanitarian causes and a football academy to mentor and train aspiring players.”
Governor Mbah praised Okoye for his achievements on the national and international stage, describing him as a role model for the youth. He pledged the state government’s support for Okoye’s football academy project, including providing land for its establishment.
“Maduka is not just making us proud on the global stage; he is also poised to give back,” Mbah said. “In recognition of his achievements and commitment, I am proud to appoint him as an Ambassador of Enugu State. He will serve as a role model to our children, especially those in our Smart Green Schools.”
The governor also highlighted plans to upgrade the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium to FIFA standards and invited Okoye to participate in the next edition of the Enugu International Marathon, an event that will feature elite runners from around the world.
Mbah shared photos of Okoye’s visit on social media, emphasising his administration’s focus on youth empowerment and development.
“At the heart of our vision is the youth – their talent, passion, and future. And with proud sons like Maduka Okoye, Enugu is truly rising,” Mbah wrote.
