An unnamed soldier has allegedly shot a man, Joseph Pessu, dead at Ugbuwangue community in Warri South Local Government Area (LGA) of Delta State, police said on Thursday.

The incident occurred on the second day of the lockdown directive issued by the governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, over the coronavirus pandemic.

Police in the state say they have begun investigation into the incident.

Delta police spokesperson, Onome Onovwakpoyeya, said when asked if the victim was killed by a soldier, “Yes, it is true. It just happened today, as I was told, and there is not much information yet.”

The state government has called for an immediate investigation into the killing of the 28-year old.

“The state government has sent a delegation to the family of the deceased young man to condole with them over the loss of their son.

“Military authorities have also been contacted to carry out an immediate and thorough investigation into the killing,” the commissioner said.
