With partisan politics finally out of the way Nigerian actors, producers and directors settled down to making good movies in 2015.

We take a look at six of the best movie that made waves in 2015.

  1. Dry

DryActress, Stephanie Linus, made her directing debut with Dry, a movie about 13-year-old Halima (Zubaida Ibrahim Fagge) whose poor uneducated parents marry her off to Sani (Tijjani Faraga), a 60-year-old man who constantly rapes. Stephanie Linus, Liz Benson, William McNamara, Darwin Shaw and Paul Sambo star in this one.

Dry won three awards at the Best of Nollywood (BON) Awards including Best Cinematography, Best Screenplay and Movie with the Best Social message. It also picked up nine nominations including Best Movie for the upcoming Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards (AMVCA).

  1. Fifty

Fifty the MovieFifty was Directed by Biyi Bandele and executively produced by media veteran, Mo Abudu. It is the story of a few pivotal days in the lives of four Nigerian women at the pinnacle of their careers.

Tola, Elizabeth, Maria and Kate are forced at midlife to take inventory of their personal lives, while juggling careers and family against the sprawling backdrops of the upper-middle-class neighbourhoods of Lagos.

With top actresses like Omoni Oboli, Ireti Doyle, Dakore Akande and Nse Ikpe-Etim, it is a little wonder that the movie reportedly made N20million in a holiday weekend, emerging the highest by a Nigerian film.

  1. Road to Yesterday

Genevieve Nnaji Oris ErhueroCentred on an estranged couple embarking on a journey of love, betrayal and redemption Genevieve Nnaji’s effort, Road to Yesterday, had everyone talking in 2015. The movie closed the 5th edition of Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF) in Lagos.

  1. Iya Alalake

Iya AlalakeActress, Fathia Balogun, pulled off her first comic role in the movie Iya Alalake. The movie tells the story of the female leader of a musical band, Senwele.

Iya Alalake bagged the Best Indigenous Movie award at the 2015 AMVCA.

  1. The First Lady

The First LadyAnother ‘highest grossing Nigerian movie of the year,” Omoni Oboli’s The First Lady tells the story of a prostitute, Michelle, who is stuck in a world she cannot escape from. Her hope is that one day a prince charming would rescue her from it all.

Along with Omoni, other actors in the movie include Alex Ekubo, Joseph Benjamin, Chinedu Ikedieze, Yvonne Jegede and Anthony Monj.

  1. Gbomo Gbomo Express

Gbomo Gbomo ExpressAnother of the “star-studded” movies of 2015, Gbomo Gbomo Express stars Ramsey Nouah, Gideon Okeke, Osas Ajibade,  Blossom Chukwujekwu, Gbenro Ajibade, Alexx Ekubo, Ikechukwu, Shaffy Bello–Akinrimisi, Kenneth Okolie, Omoye Uzamere, Niqua Johnson, Shakar EL, and Ben Thomas.

Directed and produced by Walter Banger, the film centres on the kidnap and ransom of a record label executive during a night of celebration with a beautiful socialite.
