Siasia eyes South Africa coaching job

Samson Siasia

Ex-Super Eagles star, Samson Siasia, has reportedly applied to coach South Africa national football team.

The Bafana Bafana have been without a substantive manager after the South African Football Association (SAFA) sacked Ephraim ‘Shakes’ Mashaba in December.

Mashaba, 66, was axed following an unpardonable burst up that angered the country’s FA.

Siasia, who has had three different stints as coach of the Super Eagles, is currently without a job following the expiration of his contract with the Nigeria U-23 team.

The former striker led the Dream Team VI to the country’s only medal at last summer’s Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Should the 49-year-old get the nod, he will come up against his own nation with Nigeria drawn against the South Africa in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Among some of his coaching achievements, Siasia coached Nigeria to a silver medal in Beijing in 2008, and was the winning coach of the African U23 Nations Cup in 2015.
