I showed my coup movie to Obasanjo – Izu Ojukwu

Nollywood director, Izu Ojukwu, has revealed that he showed his movie, 76, based on the February 13, 1976 military coup in Nigeria to former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

Obasanjo became military Head of State following the assassination of General Murtala Mohammed in an abortive coup led by Lt. Col Buka Suka Dimka.

His military regime lasted from February 13, 1976 to September 30, 1979.

The retired General returned to power as civilian President from May 29, 1999 to May 29, 2007.

According to Ojukwu, after seeing the film, Obasanjo confessed that they didn’t consider the human angle when considering the security implication of the coup.

As depicted in the film, the penalty for treason is death.

76 was one of Nigeria’s best films in the City to City programme of the just concluded Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).

It stars Ramsey Nouah, Rita Dominic, Chidi Mokeme, Ibinabo Fiberesima and others.
