Senate to screen acting CJN Tanko Muhammad Wednesday

The Senate will on Wednesday screen the nomination of Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Tanko Muhammad.

This was decided on Tuesday after a voice vote called by the Senate President Ahmed Lawan.

Justice Muhammad will be screened by a committee of the whole Senate.

President Muhammadu Buhari had last week forwarded his name to the Senate for confirmation, in accordance with Section 23(1) of the 1999 Constitution.

The National Judicial Council (NJC) had recommended Muhammad for the position after former CJN Walter Onnoghen was convicted by the Code of Conduct Tribunal on April 18 for false assets declaration and subsequently banned from holding public office for 10 years.
