Scavenger in court for allegedly stealing underground electric cables

A 27-year-old scavenger, Ishaku Mohammed, who allegedly dug and stole underground electric cables valued at N300,000, on Friday appeared in a Magistrates’ Court in Ojo, Lagos.

The police charged Mohammed with two counts of wilful damage of government property and theft.

The prosecutor, Insp. Simon Uche told the court that the defendant committed the offence on Oct. 13 at the Trade Fair Motel located in the Trade Fair Complex in Ojo, Lagos.

Uche alleged that when the defendant was apprehended he lied that he bought the cables for N6,500.

The offence, said, contravened the provisions of sections 287, 339 and 411 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State 2015.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Magistrate A.A. Adesanya admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N150,000 with two sureties in like sum.

He adjourned the case until Dec. 17 for substantive trial.
