Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has praised senator Gbenga Ashafa as a dedicated public servant and a worthy ambassador of Lagos State, as the latter marked his 70th birthday on Tuesday.
In a congratulatory message released by his special adviser on media and publicity, Gboyega Akosile, Governor Sanwo-Olu described Ashafa’s life as one of impactful service both at the state and national levels.
“On behalf of my family, the people and government of Lagos State, I congratulate Senator Gbenga Ashafa on his 70th birthday,” the governor said.
“His commitment, service and contributions to the growth and development of Lagos State as a civil servant, politician and federal lawmaker are well noted in the history of our dear state.”
Sanwo-Olu commended Ashafa’s decades of public service, highlighting his roles as director of planning in the governor’s office, executive secretary of the Lagos State land use and allocation committee and permanent secretary of the Lagos State Lands Bureau.
The governor also lauded Ashafa’s legislative accomplishments during his tenure as the senator representing Lagos East in the seventh and eighth National Assembly.
“He represented Lagos East very well and made remarkable contributions toward the progress of Nigeria,” Sanwo-Olu noted.
“We are proud to celebrate and associate with him on this milestone birthday.”
Former senator Ashafa, a two-term lawmaker, is widely recognised for his focus on infrastructure, housing and land reforms.
After leaving the Senate in 2019, he was appointed as the managing director of the Federal Housing Authority by former President Muhammadu Buhari.
As the former senator joined the league of septuagenarians, Sanwo-Olu wished him “a long life in good health and prosperity,” and prayed that God would grant him continued strength and wisdom “to serve humanity and our dear country, Nigeria.”
