Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee against Corruption (PACAC), Prof. Itse Sagay, has countered the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, who recently said his monthly salary was N750,000.

Lawan had on Tuesday said there would be no “jumbo pay” for senators and that his salary was N750,000.

In reaction to his statement, Sagay told Punchng.com on Wednesday that Lawan was not being honest with Nigerians.

The law professor said the Senate President skipped allowances which Nigerians know contains the bulk of the money that senators earn.

Sagay said Lawan might be right about his salary but that if allowances are added, a senator would be taking home close to N14 million.

“That is where the jumbo pay comes in, when you talk of building, furniture, domestic this or that, 15 items and those items alone bring everything up to N13.5m a month. So, simply mentioning the bare salary, which brings it to over N14m, is not sufficient,” Sagay said.

He also said he was not certain of how much principal officers of the National Assembly earn but that they earn more than ordinary members.

Sagay said details of allowances earned by principal officers of the seventh assembly showed about N280 million earned in a year in allowances.
