Robbery suspect arrested at Catholic Renewal retreat

Police in Lagos have arrested a robbery suspect at St. Patrick Catholic Renewal Church, Jakande Open Field.

Lagos police Spokesman, Bala Elkana, in a statement on Sunday said a motorcycle conveying three persons was driven into the campground on Saturday.

“The passengers mingled amongst the worshipers who were attending three days retreat with intent to dispossess worshippers of their valuables such as handsets, cash etc,” Mr Elkana said.

He added that patrol teams were deployed to the location and a 19-year-old, Wasiu Kamarudeen, believed to be the ring leader, was arrested.

Police said one locally made short gun with one live cartridge was recovered from him alongside the motorcycle.

“The Command Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) has launched a manhunt of the remaining two suspects. Investigation is ongoing and the case will be charged to court as soon as investigation is completed,” Elkana said.

He also said a 28-year-old man, Fatai Nafiu, had been arrested for allegedly raping a 15-year-old girl in Bariga area of the state.

Also, Elkana said in the statement that a 34-year-old man, Taiwo Sheuases, had been apprehended for allegedly defiling a teenager in Bariga Market Square.

The spokesman said a 50-year-old man had also been arrested for allegedly defiling a 3-year-old girl at Ajao Estate, Oshodi.

The statement said the suspects would be charged to court.
