Revealed: Crown FC footballer died on the way to nephew’s birthday

Samson Folorunso, the Crown FC of Ogbomosho footballer who died in an auto accident along the Oyo/Ogbomosho Road on Saturday was travelling to Ibadan to celebrate his nephew’s birthday, Qed.ng has learnt.

A source close to the midfielder’s family informed this medium that the deceased, who was on a two-day break from the Nigeria National League club, was also scheduled to collect foodstuff sent by his parents from his brother, Emmanuel Folorunso, whose son just clocked one year old.

“The entire family is devastated that what should have been a celebration turned into a tragedy,” the source who crave anonymity told Qed.ng.

Folorunso and 11 others died when the bus they were travelling in plunged into the Odo-Oba River after the driver lost control in a bid to avoid a collision with an articulated truck.

Samson Alo, another Crown FC player, who was accompanying Folorunso, however, survived the accident.

He was said to have swam to safety.

Grief-stricken coach of Crown FC, Fatai Osho, later wrote on Facebook: “One of my Samsons is gone! Players I nurtured from their primary school days. Played with me at Littleton United FC, the Lagos State Under-17, Remo Stars FC, Supreme Court FC and now Crown FC.

“Great talent is gone. You won’t be able to play for your dream team Barcelona again. Death has cut it short.

“Brake failure made the bus both of you were travelling in to plunge into the river. One was able to swim out and the other couldn’t. So, Samson Folorunsho died while Paul Samson Alo escaped. Could something wake Samson up for me! No, I won’t see Samson again. I’m weak and lost.”

Survived by both parents and four siblings, Folorunso was the fourth child of his family.

He was buried on Sunday at Ikuponiyi Estate, Oke Ira, Ogun State.
