Fuji musician Remi Aluko has opened up about his worsening health, revealing that he has been battling glaucoma for years and now struggles with his eyesight.

Speaking in an interview with Oyinmomo TV, Aluko said that despite undergoing eye surgery, his condition has deteriorated.

“I’m a glaucoma patient. I’m managing myself; I’m currently not seeing. Despite being a glaucoma patient, many people don’t know. There’s no difference between me and a blind person now, but no one knows because I don’t let my condition weigh me down. Thank God that I know how to take care of myself like someone who can see. I decided not to dwell on my condition because I don’t want to be depressed,” he said.

The singer said he has learnt to cope with the condition and prefers not to focus on it in order to protect his mental wellbeing.

Aluko’s struggle with glaucoma has been known for several years. In a 2018 interview, he disclosed that he had undergone surgery in India after being diagnosed with the eye disease. At the time, he said the operation helped but his vision was no longer as clear as it used to be.

Glaucoma is a disease that damages the optic nerve and can lead to permanent vision loss if not detected and treated early. The condition often develops gradually and may not show symptoms until significant damage has occurred.

Born Aderemi Aluko, the singer is popularly known as the Igwe of Fuji. He began his music career as a teenager and rose to prominence in the Yoruba music scene, releasing his debut album Celebration in 1995.
