Super Falcons forward Rasheedat Ajibade has appealed to fans to pray for Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi, who has been placed in an induced coma following emergency abdominal surgery.

Awoniyi, who plays for Premier League side Nottingham Forest, was rushed to the hospital after sustaining a serious injury during Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Leicester City.

The 27-year-old reportedly collided with a goalpost in the closing moments of the match while attempting to score.

The club confirmed in a statement on Monday that Awoniyi underwent urgent surgery and is currently recovering.

“The club can confirm that Taiwo Awoniyi has had urgent surgery following the abdominal injury sustained during Sunday’s match against Leicester City,” the statement read.

“Everyone at Nottingham Forest sends their best wishes to Taiwo. We will provide further updates when appropriate.”

Despite the club’s assurance that he is “recovering well,” concerns remain after it was revealed that the striker was placed in a medically induced coma to aid his healing process.

Ajibade, who plays for Atlético Madrid Femenino, expressed her concern on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, urging the public to lift Awoniyi in prayers.

“Our hearts are heavy as we hold Taiwo Awoniyi in our prayers,” she wrote.

“Just days ago, he shared his light and strength with us on the Rash 4 Christ podcast. Now, as he fights in this difficult moment, we stand with him and his family in faith and hope.
God is with you, Taiwo. You’re not alone. Please say a prayer for Taiwo Awoniyi and his family.”
