Rangers begins NPFL title defence with home loss to Abia Warriors

Rangers International

Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) champions, Enugu Rangers, suffered an unexpected 2-1 home defeat to Abia Warriors in their first game of the new season.

New signing, Fortune Omoniwari, set the Cathedral into rapturous mood when he put the Flying Antelopes in front after just 10 minutes.

However, it turned out that it wasn’t their day as goals from Emeka Isaac and Godwin Zaki won all three points for Okey Emordi’s lads.

Aside Rangers’ shocking home defeat, Plateau United was another team who managed to win on the road in the first day of the 2016/17 season. The Jos-based side stunned newly promoted Remo Stars 2-1 in Ijebu Ode.

But it was a different tale for two other debutants, Katsina United and ABS FC who were victorious against Gombe United and Akwa United respectively.
