Several policemen and a point of sale (POS) operator have been arrested for alleged extortion of a United Arab Emirates’ (UAE) returnee.

The alleged extortion, which occurred on Thursday at Festac area of Lagos, saw the victim part with N200,000.

A former youth representative on #EndSARS panel on police brutality and the Lekki shooting in Lagos Rinu Oduala raised alarm over the incident on Twitter.

According to her, the victim “took an Uber from the airport to Festac and bumped into Nigerian police officers who profiled, unlawfully searched his phone, harassed and dragged him to their station. They forced him to write false statements without his lawyer, then proceeded to ask him to give them N15,000,000. He ended up paying N200,000 to end the mess.”

Ms Oduala added that the “young Nigerian came back after years of being away and his first night in the country was filled with nightmares.”

Later on Friday, she tweeted that several persons including social media influencer Segun Awosanya aka Segalink helped recover the money.

Lagos police spokesman Olumuyiwa Adejobi said the erring policemen would be prosecuted.

“Festac Lagos UAE Returnee Extortion: Police Identify, Arrest Erring Police Personnel. They will be caused to face the full wrath of the law. Details soon,” he tweeted on Saturday night.
