Policeman faces murder charge for killing girl in Lagos

One of the police officers involved in the killing of a teenager, Hadijat Sikiru, in the Adamo area of Ikorodu, Lagos State, will be charged to court for murder, the police say.

In a statement on Friday by spokesman of the police in Lagos, Bala Elkana, Sergeant Mudi Emmanuel, after facing an orderly room trial at the command’s Provost Marshall Unit was found wanting for professional misconduct.

“Investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Adijat Shakiru an SS1 Student in Adama community, Ikorodu has revealed that Sgt Mudi Emmanuel who was together with four other members of the surveillance patrol team on operation at that community is found wanting for professional misconduct and currently undergoing orderly room trial at the Command’s Provost Marshall Unit.

“His actions fell short of the rules of engagement for the use of firearms and professional standards for police officers. He will be charged to court for murder,” the statement read.

The police also said that it had arrested seven suspects in respect of the attack on a police officer at Mile 12, Lagos.

The attacked officer, Damilola Adeoye, who was on duty alongside other members of Lagos State Taskforce on Environmental Sanitation and Special Offenses when he was attacked, died on Thursday morning.

“The seven suspects arrested in respect of the attack will in addition to initial charges drafted against them, be charged for murder,” the police said.
